Remembering 9/11
By Felix Hung
9 years after the horrific terrorist attacks that took down the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the country is no longer united against the war against terror. Religious tensions are running high amidst a Florida Pastor threatening to burn the Quran (sometimes spelled Koran) and debates continue about the proposed New York City Mosque at ground zero. Everyone seems to have a political agenda and is forgetting what happened 9 years ago. The victims and their families are living memories and heroes. Why divide them over an issue that we as American will not win like having a Mosque at ground zero? We should stand united as we were September 12, 2001 and refocus our efforts and energy on the changes needed and the fight we still need to fight in Afghanistan and abroad. Our personal opinions on then Florida pastor who wanted to burn copies of the Quran or whether it is right to have a mosque at ground zero should not be in the conversation. If we make it controversial, the world will see it as Americans being insensitive and having religious bias towards the Muslim religion. I hope today we show the world that we know September 11 was a heinous act of individuals, not of an entire religion. If we are controversial, the backlash will likely occur overseas to our troops who are serving abroad. I have always said, no matter what your views or your political affiliation, stand behind our troops. Let us be 50 United States today in remembrance of the 9-11 victims and in support of our troops around the world serving abroad in the fight for democracy. |

Your opinion has a lot of good points Felix, and on it's face a wise sentiment. But for many of us, it's not their right of putting up this mosque or "community center" that's the issue. Those terrorists who attacked our country on 9/11 did do in the name of Allah. Moderate, or so-called moderate Muslims aside, there has been no attempt made to compromise on this by those who want to put this thing up. Plus this Imam has made certain comments in Arabic while on his government paid tour that brings his motivation in question. The person in charge of financing this building is a slum lord. It is the height of insensitivity of this Iman to absolutely insist that it must be this location where part of one of the planes who hit the tower landed on the roof along with human body parts. All this man has to do is exhibit a spirit of compromise. People -- Donald Trump comes to mind -- have even offered to help finance the endeavor if only they would just move it a few blocks away. The whole thing make me and many others suspicious. Whether or not there are any ulterior motives to build this mosque, this insensitivity to the families of the victims, and their absolute lack of any kind of compromising spirit creates this suspicion. I'm tired of the argument that just because this is America and not Saudi Arabia (How many Christian churches exist there?) that we should let a portion of a religion who want to kill us just walk all over us in the spirit of the first amendment. Have you ever thought about the notion that we may be having our own laws being used against us? Paranoid? Perhaps. But all the Imam has to do is to express a willingness to compromise and all of this goes away. There. I had my say. Great article, Felix.

Thanks for the response James. I agree with your thoughts that this Iman may not be sincere and forthcoming with his true intentions. I just don't believe the hate protest help the matter. I believe there are other ways of taking care of this and I did read the article about Donald Trump wanting to purchase the site for more than market value - which was turned down by the site owners.
I agree James, very insensitive. In fact, on a personal note, I played the keyboard for the West Coast Memorial Service for Tom McGuiness (co-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11 - the first airplane to crash into the World Trade Center.) His family went to our church before they moved to the East Coast. I will never forget Cheryl McGuiness and her kids sitting in the front row. This is so insensitive and so hurting for their loss and many others.
No matter what side of this issue we are on, Felix we are FREE to debate it. Nowhere else in the world could we lash out with our feelings as we do in America. When we see radicals shooting in our streets, then our freedoms are gone. Pray that this doesn't happen!! Shooting off our mouths, is still better then bullets. Thank you for sharing this well written intel. Best wishes. Frederick
