Top 5 Heisman Trophy Candidates

By Felix Hung

Top 5 2010 Front Runners for the Heisman Trophy:

5. Greg McElroy, Alabama (Senior), Quarterback

Why he's at #5: I am a fan of Alabama and Nick Saban, but I don't think 'Bama is repeating it's undefeated year or winning the BCS Championship this year. I don't think they'll make it out of the SEC again without a loss. If the Crimson Tide make it to the BCS McElroy and teammate Heisman Winner '09 Mark Ingram both will likely be in all the talks.

4. Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State (Junior), Quarterback

Why he's at #4: Ohio State has a pretty tough schedule or Pryor would be higher. If the Buckeyes make the BCS Championship, Pryor will contend for the Heisman but NOT if the Buckeyes face Arkansas. Pryor's stats will need to also improve to keep up with other quarterback he'll be compared with (Kellen Moore Boise State, Ryan Mallet Arkansas, Greg McElroy Alabama).

3. Dion Lewis, Pittsburgh (Sophomore), Running Back

Why he's at #3: Last year Lewis ran for 1,799 yards and 17 touchdowns from 325 carries. Dave Wannstedt's Panthers have a good shot of winning the Big East and going undefeated in the process. If they can get past Utah and Miami, Dion can expect to be at the Heisman ceremony.

2. Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech (Sophomore), Running Back

Why he's at #2: 1655 yards rushing on 293 carries and 21 touchdowns his Freshman year and the last 3 Heisman Winners were all sophomores (Tim Tebow, Florida Gators 2007, Sam Bradford, Oklahoma Sooners 2008, and Mark Ingram, Alabama 2009). Virginia Tech will probably be going to a two back system with Darren Evans back, so presumably Williams will have less carries. If the Hokies make it to the BCS Championship he'll contend for the Heisman.

1. Ryan Mallett, Arkansas (Junior), Quarterback

Why he's at #1: In 2009 Mallett, threw for 3,627 yards and 30 touchdowns as a sophomore! I truly believe Bobby Petrino's Razorbacks will be SEC Champions and has one of the best shots at a BCS Championship.

Only one player has ever won the Heisman twice, Archie Griffin of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1974 and 1975 and I don't think Mark Ingram of Alabama will put the stats up and I don't think Alabama will be in the BCS Championship. As you can see from my Heisman candidates, I believe Pitt, Virginia Tech, Arkansas and Ohio State all have a very good shot at hoisting the Crystal Ball over their heads in January. Now, they'll have to all put in their work and see how the chips fall.

Contributor's Note

My picks were based on high powered offensive performers who would lead their team to the BCS Championship or a BCS game. There are a lot of great football players who will be in the conversation but will not be a finalist due to this fact.

I don't follow football, so sorry, I have nothing significant to say. Good luck with your picks.
